Advanced Taxes
Advanced Taxes Explained
Let's assume that you live in a state where freight is taxable, so DesignSmart is configured to charge tax on all freight charges. Then what happens when you receive a project in a state where you collect sales tax, but that state doesn't charge tax on freight? What is the best way to handle this?
One option is to modify the sales tax settings for all items that incur freight charges, as explained in the preceding section. However, that would be tedious at best and probably impractical for a large project. Fortunately, DesignSmart offers Advanced Taxes to deal with these situations.
The best way to understand Advanced Taxes is to start by understanding that in DesignSmart, there are “System Tax Settings”. These are the default tax settings that are applied to every project. In this example, the System Tax Setting for freight is not taxable. What is required, then, for a project where freight is taxable, is a way to override the System Tax Settings and establish project-specific tax settings - and that is what Advanced Taxes allows you to do - create tax settings specific for a job.
You usally won't need to turn on Advanced Taxes
Most firms will never need to turn on Advanced Taxes, and only a few firms will need to use this feature on rare occassions. Before you turn this on, feel free to check with Support@DesignSmart.Tech to make sure it makes sense for your firm to turn this feature on.
Activating Advanced Taxes
If you have a project where the default sales tax settings need to be adjusted, then go to Projects Detail > Markups Tab, then click on the switch shown below.

After a confirmation window, you'll see a screen similar to the one below. In this screen, you can modify the default sales tax settings as needed for this specific project.
